Blending Board Techniques

Skill Level:  All Levels

Prerequisites:  The only prerequisite is an open mind, a desire to learn and have fun with color.

Class Description:  Are you intrigued by the possibilities a blending board opens up but don’t know where to start?  Would you like to see what you can accomplish before committing to buying your own?  Or maybe you’ve played around with your blending board and would like to explore some new options.  In this workshop, we will start with the basics of applying and removing fiber and the care and cleaning of your blending board.  We will them move on to some of the more interesting things we can do with blending boards, such as making matching batts, striping, garneting, etc. 

Participants should bring:
Blending board (if you have one). 

Materials fee includes:

Participants will receive fiber, additional blending board supplies, and handouts.

Terri Will Provide:

Terri will have a limited number of blending boards available for participants to borrow during the workshop. However, Terri’s boards must be reserved in advance by emailing Terri at TerriSpins@gmail.com.


Color Blending with Hand Cards

Skill Level:  All Levels

Prerequisites:  The only prerequisite is an open mind, a desire to learn and have fun with color.

Class Description:
Have you ever wanted just a little bit of color for your spinning or knitting project? Have you ever wanted to spin your own gradient yarn? In this workshop, we will play with blending small amounts of fiber to create just the yarn that you want for your color work projects. We will also work on blending colors to create gradient yarns. We will also play with blending different types of fibers together to create additional color effects.  We will also discuss how to transfer this knowledge to blending larger amounts of fiber for larger projects.

Participants should bring:
Hand cards (wool or cotton).  A wheel or spindle for spinning samples.

Participants will receive fiber and handouts.

Terri Will Provide:

Terri will have a limited number of handcards available for participants to use during the workshop.


Color Blending with a Drum Carder

Skill Level:  All Levels

Prerequisites:  The only prerequisite is an open mind, a desire to learn and have fun with color.

Class Description:
We will discuss blending fiber to create just the yarn that you want. You will have the opportunity to watch as we work on blending colors to create gradient yarns. We will also play with blending different types of fibers together to create additional color effects. We will also discuss how to create smaller samples before committing to blending fiber for a large project and then how to expand that sample to achieve consistent results.

Participants should bring:
Drum carder, if you have one.  Hand cards (wool or cotton).  A wheel or spindle for spinning samples. 

Materials fee includes:

If done as a workshop, participants will receive fiber and handouts.

Organizer May Need to Provide:

If done as a workshop, please provide one drum carder for every two participants plus one for Terri. Terri may be able to provide a couple of drum carders depending upon travel situation.


Stash Management and Fiber Estate Planning

Skill Level:  All Levels

Prerequisites:  The only prerequisite is an open mind, a sense of humor, and a stash that needs managing!

Class Description:
How many times have you known that you have something (fiber, tool, etc.) but not been able to remember where it is?

Many of us have known fiber artists that have passed away. How many times has that person’s significant other been totally clueless regarding what to do with their loved one’s stash.

In this workshop, we will explore different methods of stash management that will allow us to be able to find what we’re looking for more easily. We will also discuss the steps that we can take to help our loved ones deal with the stuff we leave behind.

Participants should bring:
Note taking supplies.

Materials fee includes:

Participants will receive handouts and a flash drive with related templates.

Terri Will Provide:

Wit and humor! After all, this could be a really depressing topic without it! 😊


Terri’s Tool Time

Skill Level:  All Levels

Prerequisites:  The only prerequisite is an open mind and a desire to learn.

Class Description:
Spinners and their toys! We all have them. And we all have at least one tool that gives us trouble. What’s your challenge? Do you know how to wind a center pull ball on a nostepinne? Do you know how to use a McMorran Yarn Balance? These are just a few of the tools that we’ll play with and see if we can’t get “more power!” out of them. Oh, and what can we do when we don’t have our tools handy?

Participants should bring:
Note taking supplies. Any tools you have that are related to your specific questions (i.e., handcards, nostepinne, etc.).

Materials fee includes:

Participants will receive handouts and fiber to try out tools.

Terri Will Provide:

Various tools to try out.

Organizer May Need to Provide:             
Some larger pieces of equipment (i.e., drum carder).
